Mile 1 - The Neighborhood Run

Yep, it's official. I'm out of shape. Today reminded me of the day I nearly failed 7th grade gym class because I couldn't run a mile within the required time allotted to pass the end of year physical fitness test.  Eeeek! I admit it, I've never been a sports player. I grew up an only child with a propensity towards crafts, and other less strenuous tasks like librarian, shopkeeper, and boat salesman.
I did however, in 4th grade(?),win first place in the 100 meter dash - at least that's what I remember telling myself. There's a good chance I actually won 3rd place. Regardless, I remember getting a ribbon and this ribbon obviously meant I had reached the pinnacle of my sporting career to which retirement was the only logical next step. But I digress....

Back to the task at hand. Today I ran mile 1 of the next 42 miles. To the experienced runner 1 mile seems like a warm-up lap - I am in complete agreement.  Believe it or not, there was a point in my recent past when I could run 3 miles in the time it takes one to have a hot bath. Unfortunately those days are  behind me. Now it's back to square one. I hope to be back to 3 miles soon. Until then, tomorrow is another day, another mile.  I can almost hear my 7th grade gym teacher yelling at me from across the track, "STOP WALKING!! ....START RUNNING!"

Cash joined as my little engine that could. I owe the last 5 minutes to him pulling me along the path.
